Power BI health check

Get an independent review of your Power BI environment: models, measures, refreshes, access, performance, and release practices. Receive prioritized findings and a practical next step, with implementation kept separate.

The problem

Know what needs attention before commissioning a rebuild.

Common signals

When this work becomes useful

Concrete output

What the engagement can produce

A scoped environment map

Identify important reports, semantic models, data sources, refresh dependencies, users, and owners. State which parts of the environment were inspected and which were not.

Findings tied to evidence

Review calculations, model structure, refresh history, sharing and roles, performance samples, usage, and release practices. Separate confirmed issues from hypotheses that need more access or testing.

Priorities, not a maturity score

Rank issues by business consequence and dependency. Explain what to repair now, investigate next, keep as it is, or retire with the owner's agreement.

A usable decision packet

Leave findings, supporting observations, recommended actions, responsibilities, and an implementation outline. Your team or another provider can take the work forward.

Scope variants

Shape the engagement around the need

A priority reporting area

Assess the models and reports behind one recurring business review, including the definitions and refreshes it depends on.

An inherited environment

Review ownership, documentation, reliability, sharing, and release risks before accepting responsibility for a system built elsewhere.

A wider Power BI estate

Sample or inventory multiple workspaces and models according to an explicit coverage plan. A sample does not establish the condition of every asset.

Delivery approach

From current state to clear ownership

Agree the questions

Define the business concern, coverage, available evidence, and decisions the review must support.

Inspect

Examine representative artifacts and behavior with the people who know the reporting and source systems.

Prioritize

Connect findings to impact, dependencies, ownership, and the effort required to investigate or repair them.

Review the decision

Walk through the findings and next steps. There is no requirement to commission implementation from us.

Technical context

What we need to begin

Engagement fit

Clear boundaries make better projects.

Often a good fit

  • Owners deciding whether to repair, consolidate, or rebuild reporting
  • Teams inheriting an existing Power BI implementation
  • Leaders wanting an independent technical assessment

Probably not the right fit

  • Checking whether Microsoft's Power BI service is currently down
  • A compliance certification or penetration test
  • Emergency incident response or a promise to repair every issue during the assessment

Anonymized proof

The review examines the same model, definition, access, and validation concerns described in our anonymized reporting work. Findings about your environment require inspection; they are not inferred from an industry checklist.

Questions

What teams often ask first

Is this a free automated scan?

No. This is a scoped professional assessment with engineering review and a findings handoff. Tools may help gather evidence, but they do not replace the review or determine a generic score.

Does the health check include fixing problems?

Diagnosis and recommendations are the core deliverables. Any implementation is agreed separately. If you already have a specific slow report to repair, the performance optimization service may be a better starting point.

Can you review software built by another consultant?

Yes, provided you have the right to authorize access and review. We assess the current artifacts and behavior, not the reputation of the previous supplier.

What if we cannot provide direct access?

We can scope a guided review or approved exports. Missing access may limit conclusions, and those limits are recorded in the findings. Do not send sensitive data or credentials through the inquiry form.

How long does the assessment take?

Timing depends on coverage, artifact availability, stakeholder access, and whether issues can be reproduced. We agree a review window after those conditions are understood, rather than promising the same duration for every estate.
