Preserve the operating grain

A daily location census, a claim status event, a posted payment, and a worked shift describe different events at different grains. Combining them before those grains are explicit creates totals that look plausible while answering the wrong question.

A dependable analytical path records source grain, business keys, event time, correction behavior, and reconciliation expectations before measures are built.

  • Source and business-event grain
  • Effective, posted, and reporting dates
  • Late-arriving and corrected records
  • Location and organizational hierarchies
  • Reconciliation to the system of record

Preserve the minimum-necessary boundary

Operational usefulness does not require every analytical consumer to receive every source field. The HIPAA minimum-necessary standard requires reasonable efforts to limit uses, disclosures, and requests for protected health information to what is needed for the purpose.

That principle should appear in source contracts, role design, semantic models, exports, support access, and test fixtures. Synthetic or de-identified data should be used whenever production identifiers are not necessary.

  • Purpose-specific source selection
  • Least-privilege access
  • Client-controlled environments
  • Auditable administrative access
  • No unnecessary local retention

Preserve accountability around exceptions

An exception list is useful only when someone can determine whether the signal is real, understand the source context, and own the next action. Automated detection should expose failed checks, missing feeds, unusual changes, and unresolved definitions rather than silently carrying them into an executive total.

The analytical system should record the measure, threshold, owner, review cadence, and disposition path. This turns reporting from passive display into a controlled operating routine.

Preserve evidence for every material measure

A metric definition should identify its source authority, grain, inclusion and exclusion rules, time behavior, owner, and known limitations. A release should also preserve reconciliation results and business acceptance evidence.

This discipline supports ordinary reporting today and creates a safer foundation for future natural-language and AI-assisted access. Retrieval is only as reliable as the definitions and evidence underneath it.
